I was wondering about Toronto. I was there in late 1998 and was amazed at how much panty hose I saw. It was a panty hose stronghold with black being the prefered color. First off, I want to say how much I have enjoyed reading these posts. I used to think I was the only one who was into this stuff or who thought these things It is nice to find that there are others. One of the topics that got me thinking as I read other people’s posts was on the history of the panty hose fashion, its heyday and its decline. What I thought I would do to generate some discussion is to post some of my own recollections. This may be long, so if you don’t care to read, that’s fine. But I was wondering if my experiences were unique to the time and places that I lived or if others had similar experiences. I was in high school during a real golden age of panty hose. My freshman year was 1991-92. Black hose was really popular then, as was tan and nude. Colorful skirts, bright colors. By my senior year, panty hose were still popular, but the lay of the land was different. Black hose was less popular and white hose was more popular. (The popularity of the white only lasted about a year and a half; it was weird.) The grunge movement was strong, but it didn’t necessarily stop panty hose. Girls in my school had no problems wearing flanel Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then dressing up with panty hose Thursday. At the prom, every girl wore panty hose. At work, it was manditory. In college, I saw a lot less. My first year was in Community college, where I saw it sometimes, but not as much as high school. I figured college is more casual. I didn’t realize times were changing. When I transferred to a four year school, there was even less panty hose. After college, I was a substitute teacher for a brief period in 2000. In that school panty hose were still quite popular. I don’t know if this school just had a lot of old fashioned girls or if the downturn hadn’t happened yet (I would be curious to know what others thought.) Here, it was all nude and tan hose There was no white and very little black. Then I moved to Vermont. I immediately noticed a lot less panty hose. I figured Vermont was just a more casual place. There was some that first year, but each year it then declined. Occasionally, I come back to where I used to live, go back to the old malls. No panty hose Not in any dress codes. I went to a wedding a few months ago. Nobody under 30 wore panty hose. (With very formal clothes, bare legs look so tacky.) Sorry to ramble on.
